Philip Strowman

Strowman, Philip M.

Jefferson: Philip M. Strowman, age 94, passed away December 10, 2018. He was born August 3, 1924 in Lynn, MA. Philp served his country as a Sargent in the US Army during WWII. During his service from July 1943 until April 1946, he was wounded in November of 1944, receiving a Purple Heart in December of 1944. Philip received a BA degree in Physics from Harvard in 1947, and further studied at Columbia University from 1947-1950, and also the University of Wisconsin Madison. He was employed as a Professor of Physics, Atomic Physics, and also as a Laboratory Instructor at City College, UW Superior, and the Academy of Aeronautics to name a few. He also spoke fluent French and German, and could translate mathematical text from German to English. Philip lived in Madison for over 40 years where he enjoyed tennis, sailing, playing the violin, crosswords, dominos, and playing cards. He was also an avid theatre fan. Phil played lead in "Death of a Salesman" at UW Madison, and "The Scoundrel Scapin" at Columbia University. His nephew Andrew said "Philip came across to me as the number 1 of the Strowmans to stand up for moral justice on my Dad's side." "He cared and was determined to care despite my difficulties ." " Philip went out of his way to show me moral welfare . He was descended from Russian immigrants fleeing Pogrom."

Philip is survived by nieces, nephews and friends around the world, and friends, and neighbors in NYC and Madison. Jewish burial rites took place at Beit Olamim at Sunset Memory Gardens in Madison Friday, December 14, 2018.
