Stoughton- Phyllis M. Martens, age 85, passed away at Skaalen Home in Stoughton on Wednesday, December 17, 2008. She was born in Marshall on January 19, 1923 to Victor and Herta (Barfknecht) Grunewald. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1940. She was in the U.S. Navy (Waves) Hospital Corps during WWII, from December 1943 to January 1946. She married Herbert C. Martens from Marshall on May 17, 1947. After living in Madison when they first were married, they went farming in the Town of Dunkirk area in 1949, retiring in 1978. After her husband became ill with a stroke, she lovingly took care of him for eight years, until he passed away on June 29, 1992. She was a member of the Senior Center, and a volunteer worker at Skaalen Home in Stoughton. She is survived by her sister, Herta (Robert) Laatsch of Jefferson, and her brother, Roger (Imogene) of Marshall. A brother, Lawrence preceded her in death in 1987. There will be no visitation or funeral service as requested by Phyllis. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park in Monona.
