Richard Gordon Amos

November 3, 1922 — October 6, 2008

Madison-Richard G. Amos, age 85, died on Monday, October 6, 2008 at HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born in Lafayette, Indiana on November 3, 1922, son of Paul and Helen Amos. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Lafayette. When duty called, he served with distinction in the 407th Infantry Regiment of the US Army in World War II, seeing action in Germany, where he earned the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After the War, he completed his degree in bacteriology at Purdue University and then went to work at a pharmaceutical company in Zionsville, Indiana, where he renewed his acquaintance with a high school classmate, Effie Ann Snider. They were married on May 12, 1951 and had 57 happy years together. In 1952 they moved to Madison, where they had three sons, James (Suzanne Schmidt) of Verona; William (Yun) of Boise, Idaho; and Ronald (Kris) of Sturgeon Bay. He worked for American Scientific Laboratories, which was later acquired by Schering-Plough. During all their years together he and Effie Ann were very active in their church and community. Upon retirement, they went on many exciting cruises and trips all over the world. Richard was a first-rate amateur photographer, and he passed his skills and love of visual arts on to many of his children and grandchildren. His life's impact on those who loved him was quiet but profound and enduring.Richard was preceded in death by his son James and his wife Effie Ann. He is survived by brothers Donald and John, sons William and Ronald, grandchildren, nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at
ST. JOHN'S  LUTHERAN CHURCH, 322 E. Washington Ave., with Rev. Ken Smith officiating.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3325 E. Washington Ave., Madison and at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church Emergency Fund.
