Sun Prairie- Richard “Dick” Bohling, 86, of Sun Prairie, WI passed away peacefully following a short illness on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at UW Hospital, Madison, WI. He was born in a small hospital on June 12, 1938 in Poynette, WI, son of Cecil and Geneva (Serstad) Bohling. He took joy showing his family the hospital, still standing today, which is actually a house.
Dick graduated from Poynette High School in 1956, and attended UW Platteville where his time was cut short to enlist in the Air National Guard where he served as a reserve member. Dick married Kay Anderson on March 3, 1962 and they enjoyed most of those 62 years together in Sun Prairie, WI.
Dick was an avid fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers. Dick especially enjoyed UW Badgers Football and Basketball, having had season tickets for over 30 years to both. Back in the day he could be seen sweeping occasionally, on the ice that is, most refer to it as curling. When the weather was nice Dick golfed until it became more fun to watch the good golfers on TV.
For over 44 years Dick worked at GTE, now Verizon. He started from the ground level and worked his way up to the Governmental Affairs Director. Dick worked with amazing people and took business trips where he grew lifelong friends rather than coworkers along the way.
As an active member of his community Dick served on the Sun Prairie Planning Commission and city’s Equal Opportunities Commission for a total of 50 years. He was a proud member of the Lions Club since 1962 and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest honor bestowed by Lions. Dick enjoyed reading books to kindergarten school children, and attending father daughter night with Amy since she was a baby. If you went to the Sweet Corn Festival he might have been parking cars that day for the Lions. Anyone who knew Dick would say he was modest and kind. He always put others needs ahead of himself, and had a great sense of humor up until his very last days. Dick was well known for smoking cherry blend tobacco from his pipe and could be seen driving around town doing so.
Dick is survived by his wife Kay, children, Steve (Maureen) and Amy; Sister-in-laws Ann (Theron) Fischer, Vicky (Steve) Stromberg and Barb Anderson, also numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Geneva Bohling; brother and sister-in-law Cecil and Audrey Bohling, father-in-law and mother-in-law Ham and Esther Anderson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mike and Mona Anderson; brother-in-law Chuck Anderson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Sun Prairie, WI at 9:30 AM with Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon immediately following, in the church fellowship hall.
The family would like to express deep appreciation to the staff of UW Hospital Madison, WI for all the care and support they provided to Dick and his family in his last days.
Please share your memories of Dick by posting in his Guestbook.
