Richard Mathew Fischer

March 11, 1921 — March 27, 2009

Sun Prairie--Richard M. Fischer went to be with the Lord on March 27, 2009. He passed away surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's.     Richard was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 11, 1921. He served with honor as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in WWII. Richard, also known as ""Dick"", attended Berea College while in the Navy and graduated from Ohio State University in 1948 as a Mechanical Engineer. Richard married Elsie Holland in 1948. Richard retired from General Motors, Electro Motive Division in LaGrange, IL, after 32 years of dedicated service.  He and his wife, Elsie, then retired to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Registered in Ohio as a Professional Engineer.   Richard was an active member of the Lion's Club for 24 years, Village Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10483 at Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. Richard loved his family, traveling, photography, but most of all he loved to play golf. He maintained a great sense of humor and quick wit to the end.   The family would like to thank Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.     He is survived by his wife, Elsie Fischer; children: Douglas ( Nancy) Fischer, West Salem, WI; Janet Wurster, Sun Prairie WI, Beverly Grossman, Scottsdale, AZ;   grandchildren: Jenna (Matt) Hickerson, Ashlie Fischer, Jeff (Lindsay) Wurster, Kristin (Aaron) Koepke; and great-grandchildren: Ella and Natalie Wurster. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Max and Stella Fischer and his brother William Fischer.     Please join us in a Celebration of his Life at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 550 Lincoln Drive, Sun Prairie with the Rev. Dr. David J. Berggren and Rev. Julie Krahn officiating. Military rites will follow by the American Legion Post 333.   A visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until the time of service. The final resting place will be in Hot Springs Village, AR.     In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to HospiceCare or the Alzheimer's Association.
