MADISON - Richard "Dick" Lee Meinert, age 69, of Sun Prairie, passed away unexpectedly at William S. Middelton VA Hospital on Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Dick was born November 20, 1945 in Dubuque, IA to K. Lee Meinert and C. Genevieve (nee Miller) Meinert.
In 1963 Dick graduated from Aquin High School in Freeport, IL where he participated in football, basketball and track while also working part time at Steinman's Grocery Store. He then attended The University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana and Rockford College.
Dick served two years in the U.S. Army, 27th Wolfhounds Infantry Regiment, with seven months in Vietnam, where in 1968 during the Tet Offensive he was wounded and subsequently honorably discharged with decoration for valor, earning a purple heart.
In civilian life Dick worked as a licensed land surveyor and accredited soil tester employed by Anthony Thousand/ Arnold & O'Sheridan and Birrenkott Surveying where he was head of the drafting department.
Mr. Meinert is survived by two children, Dr. Lori Meinert, Mission Viejo, CA and Shannon Meinert, Baraboo, WI, both of whom he was very proud of their accomplishments: Lori is a veterinarian and Shannon works at the Baraboo National Bank. Also survived by his sisters, Judith Cary, Madison, WI and Joann Davis, Freeport, IL.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, December 23 at 12:00 noon at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Owen Dr., Madison, WI 53711 with Msgr. Kenneth J. Fiedler presiding. Friends and family may call from 11:00 am until time of Mass. Please share your memories at
