Madison - Richard “Dick” Pitman passed away on August 24, 2022, at the age of 78. Dick grew up in Long Beach, California and was instilled with a desire to be in the water at an early age. Dick was an avid swimmer and came to UW Madison on a swimming scholarship in 1964 and never left the Madison area.
Dick reengaged with swimming in 1982 by getting involved with US Masters Swimming and began a long relationship with the Madison swimming community. He was able to achieve top ten results in 67 individual races during his time with USMS. He also served in several positions with USMS and was a long-time coach to many in the Madison area. Dick’s signature swim stroke was the butterfly, and he was able to swim the butterfly until just months before he passed away.
Dick met his wife, Jill Borcherding, in 2006, a friendly neighbor that turned into so much more. They were married in 2015 and they have had so much fun together over the years.
Dick is survived by his wife, Jill, two daughters Deb and Jennifer, sister Marilyn, brother Bob and several nieces and nephews.
