Richard Sarabia

February 8, 1944 — August 4, 2020

Richard J. Sarabia, age 76, of Waunakee, passed away on Tuesday, August 4th 2020, at his home. He was born on February 8th 1944, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of José and Mary Sarabia (Landry). He attended Northeastern University, married Carol (Johnson) on June 21st, 1980, and had two daughters.

He founded the Victorian Society of Malden, dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historical homes. While in Boston, he worked as a printer and newspaper editor, and took particular pride in the creation and impact of his opinion pieces.

He moved to Wisconsin in 1993, where he continued his passion for woodcraft, politics, and writing while embarking on a second career with the United States Postal Service.

Following his retirement from the Postal Service, he dedicated his time to the creation of beautiful custom woodworking pieces with his business, Second Street Studios, and cultivating his prized vegetable garden. His highest priority was always the care of his beloved family, both those of his blood, and those bound by love (not to mention the many cats dear to his heart).

He is survived by his partner Lynn Hagen, daughters Robin (Nowicki) and Heather, their mother Carol, brothers Bob and John, sisters Linda (Garvin), Pegi (Flannery), Dee Dee, and Liz, aunts Betty Wysocki and Elaine Landry, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, José and Mary, his uncle Jackie, and his aunts Barbara Jean Landry and Kay Moore.

A celebration of life will be held in Waunakee’s Village Park Murphy Field, on Friday, August 14th, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. His ashes will later be spread at his cherished Chatham beach on Cape Cod. Memorial donations may be made to the Autistic Self Advocacy Network or the Wisconsin Humane Society.
