Richard Shutter

March 4, 1934 — October 31, 2008

Madison - Richard (Dick) Shutter, age 74, died on Friday, October 31, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 4th, 1934, to Floyd and Marcella Shutter in Tomah, Wisconsin. He graduated from Tomah High School in 1952. Dick was an outstanding high school athlete excelling in football, basketball, baseball and track, lettering in all four sports beginning in his freshman year. Dick was the point guard on Tomah High School's 1952 team that went to the State Basketball Tournament. He went on to attend Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin and received his Architectural degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois. Dick and Jeanne (Hyland) Shutter were married for 56 years and they have four children. Lance (Mary) Shutter, Hollie (Mark) Engman, Erica (Steve) Hill, and Kane (Kim) Shutter. Dick was the much loved ""Grandpa Dick"" to Collier and Haley Shutter, Marci-Ann Hill, and Sedona Shutter. As owner of RC Shutter Architects he was an architect for 50 years. Winning a national design award for one of the many churches he designed throughout Wisconsin. He was also the past president of the Madison Lions Club, and past President of the Wisconsin chapter of The American Institute of Architects. He also served many years on the Urban Design commission for Madison, Wisconsin and was a member of the Orchard Ridge Neighborhood Association Board for a number of years. He and his wife, Jeanne, were members of Nakoma Country Club for over 35 years where they had many fond memories with friends and family. He and Jeanne cherished those friendships and Jeanne continues to appreciate the support of those lifelong friends. He had a life long love affair with his wife, Jeanne, since they met at the young age of five years old. Everyone who watched them dance together were in awe, they truly were inseparable. Dick loved his many friends and adored his children and grandchildren who in turn adored him with all of their hearts. He is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; mother, Marcella Shaw of Tomah, Wisconsin; brother, Robert (Deanne) Shutter of Tomah, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Floyd Shutter. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with a visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Meriter Hospital. This is where Dick spent his last days and they were truly compassionate individuals. Also, the family would like to invite all of our family and friends to the Shutter's home at 5202 Barton Road after the service to reflect with the family about Dick's life.
