Sun Prairie

Richard A. Wehler, AKA Rick, passed away on October 17, 2024 . He was born on November 28, 1949 in Springfield, OH. His family moved to Chicago and then on to Minneapolis. Eventually, they settled in their new home in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Rick began his career in produce at a local store at age 16 while attending school. He continued to work produce departments while attending the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1971 with a degree in Psychology and minor in Chemistry (the Chemistry probably played a big part in the milkshakes he would make!).

Rick met Cora Johnson on June 27, 1970 at a party, and the rest is history. They were married on November 6, 1971. They lived in various areas of the Minneapolis/St Paul area. Their firstborn son, Jerry, was born on Christmas Day, 1973 (Rick’s only day off that whole month). A year later, they moved into their new home in Maple Grove where two more sons followed, Andy in 1978 and Toby in 1980.

Taking on a new role with Cub Foods necessitated a move to Green Bay, WI. After a short stay there, the next transfer was to Colgate, WI which was one of his most loved locations. Nine years later, it was onto the Kenosha area where he watched over the Cub stores for all of Wisconsin and Illinois. After seven years, another relocation took the family to the Madison area until retirement on June 1, 2007.

Rick’s favorite thing to do, besides hanging out with family, was to be at our 65-acre forested property in Richland Center. He loved walking around, moving trees, watching “critters” on the trail camera, visiting with the neighbors out there, and making true friendships with them. His other love was writing- stories from his childhood, meeting Cora’s parents & brothers (which opened his eyes to a whole other world.

Rick is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Cora; his sons: Jerry, wife Nicci, and their sons Noah and Ethan; Andy, wife Kristin, and their sons Grasyn, Lucas, and Matteo; and Toby, wife Laura, and their daughters Annabelle and Madeline. He is further survived by his sisters, Rhonda, husband Terry and their children; Sandi, husband Paul, and their children. Also, Cora’s sister and brothers: Bev (Ed) Attig and family; Richard (Deb) Johnson and family; Glen (Cheryl) Johnson and family; and many relatives and dear friends.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents Gerald “Whitey” and Margie Wehler; infant older brother Jerry Jr., in laws Art and Eleanor Johnson along with aunts and uncles.

Friends and family will gather from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at the Colonial Club, 301 Blankenheim Lane, Sun Prairie, WI 53590 to celebrate Rick’s life.
