MADISON--Robert W. Schumann, age 93 passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014. Bob was born in Madison on October 1, 1920 to Robert and Henrietta (Ohrt) Schumann.
He was a veteran having served during WWII with the Army Air Corps. Bob attended the University of Wisconsin Madison receiving his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation in 1949, he joined the staff at Argonne National Labs where he developed the first measurement instruments to employ digital computer techniques. In 1958, Bob founded Nuclear Data, Inc. where he designed the first all solid-state pulse height analyzer. In 1965 he co-founded Nicolet Instrument Corp. where he served as Vice President and Director. Among his technical achievements for Nicolet was the conception and development of the first all-digital oscilloscope. He holds many patents.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mary; children Georgian (Randall) Springen, John Schumann, Nikki (Steve) Marsh and Jean (Daniel) Lee; 12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and his beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother John; and sisters Beulah, Olive, Doris, Georgian and Virginia.
A memorial service followed by military honors will be held 11:00 a.m. at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5701 Raymond Rd., Madison, on Friday, March 14, 2014 with Pastor Brent Campbell officiating. Family will greet friends at church one hour prior to service.
