Sun Prairie- Robert L. "Smitty" Smith, age 54, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Agrace HospiceCare Inc. surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on January 25, 1958 in Menominee, MI, the son of Glenn & Janet (Evans) Smith. Robert was united in marriage with Marjorie Niemojuski on October 31, 1981 in Menominee, MI.
Smitty spent 25 years engineering, testing, installing and servicing fire protection systems in offices and commercial buildings throughout Southern Wisconsin, Ohio and Michi that helped many people. His passion for building transitioned homeward, where he was often managing projects in his home office, affectionately known as "Dad's Workshop". From complex room renovations and remodeling, to landscaping, outdoor living area construction, and vehicle maintenance as well, Smitty's creativity and precision provided inspiration to all who witnessed his completed efforts. When he wasn't helping family and friends with projects, Smitty took to the open roads to absorb the fresh air and rattle a few windows riding his Harley throughout the towns and country sides on the many beautiful days gone by. Smitty loved his new grandson Cooper. He enjoyed the moments sitting with his grandson, telling him stories and holding his hand. The cherished family time spent with his best friend and wife, Marjorie, and his children Chris, Kelly, Adam, and Nikki are his greatest memories. His legacy will live on through his wonderful family who all miss him dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his children, Christopher (Kelly) Smith, Adam Smith and Nichole Smith; his grandson, Cooper; his mother, Janet Smith; his sisters, Debbie (Terry) Mylener, Sandi (Scott) Gressel and Lori (John) Mans; his brother, Steve (Cheryl) Smith; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his father.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, July 13th at 4:30 pm at the Cress Funeral Home Chapel, 3325 E. Washington Ave., Madison with Chaplain Debra Holbrook leading. A time of gathering will be held at the funeral home from 2:30 pm until the time service.
A Memorial Service will also be held Sunday, July 15, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, 923 5th Street, Menominee, MI at 4:00 pm. A time of gathering will be held at 2:00 pm until time of service.
The Smith family would like to particularly thank neighbors Dan and Donna Wilson for their constant support and encouragement during their time together. Dan was with Smitty for his first plane ride to Hawaii plus numerous adventures on the farm, and was an integral guiding presence for many years. They are truly special friends who provided much needed humor and stability, particularly during these recent difficult months. They would also like to thank Agrace HospiceCare Inc. and the UW Carbone Cancer Center staff for their compassion and kindness plus a special thank you to Dr. Jeremy Cetnar for his concern and tireless efforts.
