VERGERONT, ROBERT JAMES--- MADISON , WISCONSIN Madison - Robert James Vergeront, age 89 of Madison , died on April 18, 2010 at Attic Angel Place . He was born May 19, 19 20 in La Crosse , Wisconsin to Glen W. and Elizabeth (Vandenberg) Vergeront. Â On June 19, 19 48 , he was united in marriage with Elva Muriel Vruwink in Oak Park , IL . Â He graduated from West High School in 1938 and from the University of Wisconsin in 1942. Â He immediately volunteered for service in the Air Corps and served as a non-commissioned officer. Â He later served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Infantry, training troops statewide, and as a unit commander with the 36th Infantry Division in Germany , during the final phases of the European Campaign and in the Army of Occupation. Â He graduated from the UW Law School in 1947 and served as Barron County District Attorney until returning to Madison in 1956. Â He served as Assistant Attorney General for thirty years, retiring in 1986. Â Bob and Elva were long time members of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Madison. Â He was proud of his French, Dutch, Scotch, and English ancestry and grateful for the opportunity to serve his country, community, church, state, family and friends. Â He celebrated ""joie de vivre"". Â Bob loved to build and repair things and was an avid fisherman and sports critic. Â He was a sometimes writer, poet and composer, and, at cards, a slow bidder. Â He treasured his wife, children and grandchildren. Â He is survived by his wife, Elva; a son, James (Susan) and their children, Michael, Laura, and Christopher of Madison; a son, Thomas (Jean) and their children, Ryan and Amy, of Galesville; and a daughter, Jane (James) Tatera, and their children, Kimberly, John and Mark, of Eagan, MN; a younger brother John (Sallie Walker) of Madison; nieces, nephews, in-laws and many friends. Â He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Glen. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 11 a.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road , Madison with Pastor Lin Grace Rohr officiating. Â Visitation will be that day from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Â Burial will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery , Madison at a later date. Â In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elizabeth Vandenberg Vergeront Scholarship Award for 4-H Leadership (University of Wisconsin Foundation, US Bank Lock Box, PO Box 78807, Milwaukee WI 53278-0807), or to Covenant Presbyterian Church (326 S. Segoe Road, Madison WI 53705), or the charity of your choice.
