Roger Hammons

February 6, 1944 — January 6, 2021

Cottage Grove—Roger Desmond Hammons, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on January 6, 2021. He was born February 6, 1944 in Ronceverte, WV, son of Desmond Edward and Bernice Shirley (Lewis) Hammons. He graduated Richwood WV High School in 1962. He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Bertha (Bertie) Workman on August 22, 1962 in Chicago IL. They were married 37 years and raised 3 children.

They moved to Madison, WI where Roger worked for Oscar Mayer for 31 years and retired in 1996. He was an only child, but he grew so close with Bertie’s family that they became his own.

He was known for his sense of humor, kindness, and generosity to all those around him. He enjoyed camping, motorcycle and ATV riding, gaming, and spending time with extended family.

He is survived by his children, Rod (Paula), John, Wayne (Jocelyn); grandchildren Eric, Connor, Allison,  Wyatt; and Jackie McIntosh, his companion of 21 years.

He is preceded in death by his wife Bertie; infant daughter Brenda; daughter-in-law Rachel Hammons; Brothers-in-law Ray Smith and Noel Workman; and Sister-In-Law Betty Workman.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, WI on Friday, January 15 from 11AM – 1PM. Burial will follow at Cottage Grove Cemetery.

He was loved and will be dearly missed.
