Roger Mayer, age 90, passed away on March 10, 2024. He was born on February 26, 1934 in LaCrosse, WI to Cornelius Henry Mayer and Harriet (Frey) Mayer. He grew up on the south side of Madison, attending Franklin Elementary and Central High School. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (BS, Landscape Architecture) he married his high school sweetheart, Judy Bly. They traveled to Texas where Roger completed Air Force Officer Training and Radar Observer Training. Upon returning to Madison Roger began a long career with UW Madison Facilities and Grounds. He also enrolled in the Air National Guard and was stationed at Truax Field in Madison, where he served as radar observer in F-89 interceptor aircraft and later as a member of an engineering unit.
Rog always enjoyed flying. After his Air National Guard flying duty ended he took up radio-controlled aircraft. Eventually, he obtained his private pilot’s license and flew single-engine aircraft out of Morey Field in Middleton. He enjoyed hiking in the mountains, traveling, and spending time with family, especially his grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Cornelius (Jim) Mayer. He is survived by sons Jim, Mike and Andy Mayer, and grandsons Mason and Cole Mayer.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
