SUN PRAIRIE - Roman H. Sauer, age 86, currently of Sun Prairie, passed away on October 26, 2017 at the Beaver Dam Hospital, after a long battle with various health issues.
He was born September 1, 1931 in Rubicon, Wisconsin, the son of Edward and Rose Sauer. Roman spent his childhood years on the family farm. At the age of 19, he was drafted into the Army where he served during the Korean War. He was also stationed in Germany where he was part of the Medic Driver Pool. On his discharge he returned home to hone his skills as a jack-of-all-trades.
He married the love of his life Ruth (Griepentrog) on September 20, 1958. Together they had three children.
Roman was an armchair quarterback for the Packers and the Badgers. He loved to tinker with just about anything. He loved his many tools. He was employed by the Slinger Foundry and later in life was a longtime employee of Super Excavators Construction Company. He retired after 38 years of employment from Super Excavators.
Roman enjoyed the outdoors. He could tell a fantastic "fish story". He also had a love of hunting turkey, goose, and deer. He also enjoyed his many travels throughout his lifetime. He liked playing cards. Nickel Sheepshead and Bingo were favorites of his.
In his later years, his interests evolved around Veterans activities. In 2016 he was able to participate in the Badger Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
Survivors Include: His wife Ruth of Sun Prairie, his children JoAnn (Rick) Schumacher of Sun Prairie, Kim (Bill) Tucholka of West Bend, and David (Julie) Sauer of Tigard, Oregon. Six grandchildren, Jennifer (Matthew) Haase, Alyssa Schumacher, Garrett (Courtney Stauber)Cross, Jordan Tucholka, Meredith Sauer, and Gabriel Sauer. Two great-grandchildren: Macalister and Scarlett Haase. Three sisters, Marion (Albert) Lemke of West Bend, Helen (James) Charleston of West Bend, Rosemary (Ray) Zimdars of Newburg, a sister-in-law Delores Sauer of West Bend, a brother Frank (Debbie) of Horicon, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Roman was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Rose Sauer, an infant twin brother Roland, brother Edmund Sauer, a grandson Quenten Schumacher, and a brother - in - law Albert Lemke.
The family would like to thank the friends at Hyland Park and staff who became part of the family for making the last years of his life memorable, the staff and doctors at the hospitals, who cared for him during his illness and the staff at Hillside Manor Nursing Home in Beaver Dam for "Romeo's" Care.
A Memorial Celebration of Roman's life, will be held on Sunday, November 12th 2017 in the community room at HYLAND PARK, 881 Liberty Blvd, Sun Prairie. Family and Friends may call between 1 pm-4 pm. A light luncheon will be served. In lieu of flowers the family asks donation be made to the Badger Honor Flight.
