Roman Statz, 83, died unexpectedly but peacefully on Sept. 9. He was fortunate to have his wife, Jean, by his side, and had just enjoyed a good supper and conversation at the kitchen table. He was born June 18,1932, to Wienand and Christine (Rauls) Statz in Martinsville where he lived and farmed all of his life. He married Jean Laufenberg on August 9, 1956, at St. Mary's of Pine Bluff Church. Roman served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1956 to 1958. He enjoyed fishing, reading, cooking, and being with family and friends. He also enjoyed tending his backyard orchard, growing sweet corn, and his farmers' market days.
Roman is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean; five children, Kevin, Marcelline (Peter) Ystenes, Joan (Richard) Gassen, Martin (Mary), Sarah (Kevin) Cords; and nine grandchildren.
He is further survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn (Don) Hellenbrand, and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Rosemary); sisters-in-law, Betty Laufenberg and Rose Marie Laufenberg; and in-laws, Jack (Judy) Laufenberg and Eileen (Jim) Rauls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Brian; sister and brother-in-law, Genevieve (Chris) Koch; in-laws, Herbert Laufenberg, Kenneth Laufenberg, Arthur (Leona) Laufenberg, Marian (Dave) Keller; a niece, Kathy Keller, and a nephew, Mark Statz.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, at 11:00am, at St. Martin's Catholic Church, 5959 St. Martin Circle, Martinsville, with Fr. Tait Schroeder and Fr. Brian Dulli officiating. Friends may call on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 2pm to 5pm at the Winn-Cress Funeral Home, 5785 Highway Q, Waunakee. Friends may also call at the church from 10am until the time of services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery, luncheon to follow.
The family extends special thanks to Dr. Thomas Hyzer and his staff at Associated Physicians for always giving Romie thoughtful care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent De Paul Society or Second Harvest Foodbank. Please share your memories.
