Ronald Arthur Geishirt, 87, passed away in his sleep on January 15, 2021 in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. He was born on June 16, 1933 in Madison to Arthur and Laura (Veith) Geishirt.
Ron proudly served in the US Army from 1953 to 1958. He was the Sargent of the motor pool of a MASH unit stationed in Korea during the Korean War. He was then stationed in Japan where he married Miyoko Yamaguchi on October 6, 1956. Their first daughter, Betty Ann, was born in Japan. Ron was transferred to Camp Desert Rock in Nevada where they performed atmospheric nuclear tests. During this time, Miyoko and Betty stayed with Ron’s family. The three were reunited at Fort Riley, Kansas where soldiers who married Asian wives during the Korean War were stationed to ease their transition to America. Upon discharge from the Army, the three traveled across the mid-west to Wisconsin.
Their second daughter, Patricia Kay, was born the following morning. Their family added their son, Robert Arthur, less than a year later. Ron and Miyoko built their home in Deerfield themselves. They raised their family and lived there until moving into assisted living in 2019 with their cat, Oliver. Ron worked for several decades for Irv Gullickson Milk Hauling where he picked up milk from small family farms and hauled it to the Deerfield Creamery, and later, the pump over station. When that closed in 2000, Ron continued to work as a truck driver for Best Built Garages until his retirement.
Ron and the family would camp every summer and fish whenever they could. That included ice fishing on Lake Ripley in their ice shack in the winter or in their boat on the area lakes in the summer. Fall meant pheasant or deer hunting. Ron prided himself on their large garden that harvested many fruits and vegetables throughout the year. There was always a beloved dog and/or cat as part of the family.
Ron and Miyoko never missed a sporting event, concert, or activity for their children. He was one of the few fathers that attended every parent-teacher conference. The house was a stop on the dirt bike and snowmobile trail so Ron would tune them up before heading out.
Ron also served as a volunteer for the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Department since his milk truck could be filled with water if needed to assist in a fire. He was also a member of the local Deerfield-Cambridge Memorial VFW Post 9424.
Ron is survived by his wife, Miyoko, and daughters, Betty (Wade Cantrell) and Patricia (Dave DesRochers), four grandchildren (Megan, Justin, Lauren, Brett) and four great-grandchildren (Ethan, Aidan, Alana, Robert). He is predeceased by his son, Robert (Connie), parents, five sisters (Mary, Margaret, Dolores, Lorette, and Linda), and one brother (Arthur, Jr.). Ron lived longer than anyone in his or prior generations in the Geishirt family.
The family thanks staff at Drumlin Reserve Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice. Private family burial services will be held at Highland Memory Gardens with military honors.
Please share your memories of Ron by posting on his Tribute Wall.
