Rosalie Fred Moffatt

February 26, 1925 — November 7, 2010

Rosalie Fred Moffatt passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at Skaalen Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer's.   Rosalie was born in Madison, Wisconsin on Feb 26, 1925 to Rosa Parrott Fred and Edwin Broun Fred.   Rosalie's parents were both from Virginia, her mother from Blacksburg and her Father from Middleburg.   Rosalie's father was Edwin Broun Fred, the president of the University of Wisconsin from 1945-1958.   Rosalie graduated from Wisconsin High School and then she went to New York to attend Vassar College.   After graduating from Vassar College, Rosalie earned her Master's Degree in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.   Rosalie then worked for the United States Government in Fredrick, Maryland as a biochemist at Camp Detrick.   In 1950 Rosalie married Col. Thomas L. Moffatt who served as a fighter pilot in both World War II and the Korean War.   Rosalie was preceded in death by both of her parents and her sister, Ann Conway Fred, MD.   Rosalie is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Moffatt, three children, Ashley Carter Moffatt, Courtney Moffatt Brightbill , and Thomas Edwin Moffatt; grandchildren, Ashley Helmick Anderson ( Mike) and Trevor Helmick, (Melissa)   and great-grandchildren, Peter and Ryan Anderson.     Rosalie was friendly and kind to all she met and always looked at the bright side of everything.   She taught her children to be well mannered and accepting of all, and to appreciate art and music.   She was especially devoted to her husband and family.   She was a wonderful supporter of all things University of Wisconsin, especially in relation to its teaching and research.   Rosalie also served on the board of directors of both the Madison Ballet Company and the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corp.     The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Skaalen Nursing Home in Stoughton, Wisconsin for their kind and compassionate care of Rosalie.   The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rosalie's name to the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corp, 2935 S Fish Hatchery Rd #401 Madison, WI 53711.
