MAIR, TOM
MADISON - Roswell Thomas Mair, age 90, passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital ER on Sunday morning January 29, 2017. Earlier Tom enjoyed UW Super Saturday watching the Badgers basketball game and hockey match on the big screen at St. Mary's Care Center, He then became ill and was sick for only a short time. He was born at St. Mary's Hospital on April 2, 1926 the son of Margaret and Ross Mair. Tom grew up in Morrisonville and graduated from DeForest High School in 1944. He enjoyed writing weekly sports articles for Dick Emerson and the DeForest Morrisonville Times while in high school. The Mair family has many close ties to DeForest and Arlington. Tom attended Whitewater and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma. He was asked to quit school and join the war effort. He then worked at Gisholt and then served 2 years in the Army at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. After the war Tom attended UW Madison, earning senior status. He worked as a salesman for the Mair Lumber Company, the WSJ and Cooper Glass. He was a state driver license examiner for several years, and a clerk for the US Postal Service, for 23 years. After retiring he worked part time for WPS for 10 years.
Tom enjoyed curling, golf, bowling, travelling, and weekly coffees with old roommates and buddies from the 50's and 60's who have now all passed away. He was a Badger sports fan and followed football, basketball and hockey closely, in person, and later on TV. Tom was a member of the Gridiron Club and the former Blue Line Club. Tom was an avid Packer fan, and enjoyed the Madison Packer Backers and the trips to many games in Green Bay and Milwaukee. He also followed the Brewers, Cubs, WWF and other professional teams including the Bucks when they performed in Madison.
Tom had a passion for entering contests, pools and lotteries. He won many wonderful prizes including a sailboat, a steer, World Series trip and a trip to London for 4.
Tom and the family enjoyed time spent at the family cottage in Okee on Lake Wisconsin and visiting the Minocqua area in the Summer.
The family cocker, Herkimer and Siamese Honey Bun were with Tom and Pat for 12 years and were delightful close companions.
Tom is survived by his wife of 50 years Pat, his close cousin Margaret "Peggy" Schwarz, daughter Vicky Heinz and family, sons Dr. Patrick and Tim (Sarah) Schwarz, the late cousin Pat and Jim Warner's daughter Marcia (Kent)Seeker and Nancy, sons Craig and Greg and family, the late cousin Kathleen and Sherm Geib's daughter Gail and son Dan (Melissa) and family, and late cousin Rosemary and Phil Talty's son Michael. Sister and brother-in-law Mary (David) Bourne and family, nephews Jayson (Laurie) Anderson and family, Jeffery (Jennifer) Anderson and family, niece Beth (Brian) Mulvan and family, and nephews Dan and Jonathan (Ngan) Shulman and family.
A grateful thank you to the caregivers, staff and clergy at St. Mary's Care Center including Tess, Gerry, Heather, April, Gretchen, Rebecca, Boris, Victoria, Brittany, Ally, Jessie, Melissa, Kim, Norlene, Lisa, Mary , Father Klink, and Theresa Patwell and many others. Also a special thank you to So, Lucy and Julie for making Tom's later days even better.
It is suggested that memorials may be made to The Apostolate to the Handicapped, or to a charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Owen Rd. Madison on Sat. Feb. 11, 2017 at 11:00 AM. , with Msgr. Ken Fiedler and Fr. Ken Klink concelebrating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM before the Mass. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
