Madison: Roy Campbell, a loved and respected father, grandfather, friend to many, and active member of communities in Madison, WI and Ontonagon, MI passed peacefully on Friday December 19th, 2014 at Agrace Hospice in Madison. Roy is survived by 6 children; Pat (Carol) Campbell, Julie (Linda Wayman) Campbell, Colleen Campbell, Douglas (Laura) Campbell, Michael Campbell, and Beth (John) Kuehl, 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his cherished wife Jeanne, daughter Luanne, brother Jack, and sister Margaret.
Born in Ewen, MI in 1926 to Dr. John and Lula Campbell, Roy attended Ewen High School and then trained as a pilot for the U. S. Army Air Corps until the war ended in 1945. Roy continued his education at Northern Michigan University and went on to dedicate his life to the service of adults and children with disabilities across the nation. As a former Executive Director of the Easter Seals Society of Wisconsin, Roy Campbell was instrumental in creating unique opportunities for those with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives with an innovative blend of jobs, skill training, and recreation camps. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Roy received his Masters of Science in Social Work in 1953 becoming the first male at UW to receive this degree. Roy Campbell was also an enthusiastic supporter of several community and social causes for Lake Superior and the Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where he resided after retirement.
Roy's interests were many. He loved playing cards, Big Band music, playing the piano, animals, water and snow skiing, traveling, parachuting, hunting agates in Lake Superior, opening Duck Creek, building bonfires, and spending as much time with his grand children as he could.
The Campbell family would like to extend a special appreciation to our dear friends on the beach, in Ontonagon, MI, and especially to the caring staffs of Agrace Hospice and Capitol Lakes for their support. Service and memorial plans are pending. The Campbell family will request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Agrace Hospice Center in Madison, WI. Please share a memory at
