Roy Mccormick

December 24, 1924 — May 1, 2017

MADISON- Roy McCormick, born December 24, 1924 in Indianapolis, Indiana, died May 1, 2017. He lived in his home town until April, 1943 when he entered the U.S. Navy.

Roy met Rose Troia in Madison, Wisconsin and they were married in August, 1946. They returned to Indianapolis to live for two years, then settled in Madison in 1948.

On December 31, 1950 Roy and Rose, along with Joe and Bette Troia (Rose's brother and sister-in-law), opened Paisan's Restaurant on Park Street. A few years later the restaurant was moved to the location at 821 University Avenue where it remained for about 20 years. In approximately 1952, Joe bought the Italian Village from his Uncle Matt Lombardino, and Roy and Rose became sole proprietors of Paisan's.

The couple opened Porta Bella Restaurant at 425 N. Francis near State Street in 1968. They operated both establishments until Roy retired in 1985.

Roy expressed to those close to him the great appreciation and satisfaction he derived from the relationships he developed over the years with the hundreds of restaurant employees and customers he was fortunate to meet and come to know.

Throughout their lives, Roy and Rose raised six children, enjoyed golfing, fishing and dining out in the Florida Keys and other Florida locales during vacations. Roy also loved his occasional fishing trips to Canada, and Colorado. They had opportunities to travel out of the country at various times, visiting Ireland, Germany, Italy, Egypt and Israel.

After retiring, they began spending winters in Florida. They built their northern home on Lake Wisconsin near Merrimac. This quickly became the residence closest to Roy's heart. Here he cared for a small orchard, fished for bass and pan-fish, entertained friends and family on his pontoon boat, and spent time on the links of several nearby golf courses.

Roy is survived by his adoring wife of 71 years, Rose, his six children....Terese (Terri) Zimmerman (Lloyd), Linda McCormick Carr (Stuart), Patrice McCormick-Greenwald (Kerry), John McCormick, Sue McCormick-Backus (William), Michael McCormick (Theresa); Eleven grandchildren, Grant (Shirley) and Adam (Sofia) Zimmerman, Nicholaus, Kyle (Leona) and Austin (Clarice) Backus, Annie Rose O'Day, Chelsea (Steven) Farrell, Hallie Tucker, Devin, Dana and Angelina McCormick; eleven great-grandchildren, a sister, Delores Boyes, a brother Michael McCormick, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00pm on Sunday, May 7th, 2017 at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road. A private family service will later take place at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Madison Wis.
