Ruth D. White

MADISON- Ruth Dudley White passed away peacefully amongst family and friends on Thursday, August 27. Ruth was born on August 31, 1911, to George and Mary (Nichols) Dudley in West Salem, WI. She attended Beloit College and the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1933? She married John B. White on August 22, 1936. Ruth was very active in numerous organizations, including YWCA, the League of Women Voters, United Nations Association, West End Club and Friends of International Students. Ruth was also the owner of the White Gift Box during the 1960's. Ruth and John were active members of the First Congregational United Church of Christ since joining the church in 1948. Ruth served the church in many capacities, including Section, Women's Fellowship, Congregators, choirs and countless committees. She was particularly expert at organizing large church dinners and continued cooking and delivering turkeys for the free Thanksgiving dinner well into her 90's. John and Ruth were both active in square dancing in the Madison area , loved camping and attending concerts by the Capitol City Band each summer.

Ruth is survived by daughters Sally (Maurice) Hopen of Stoughton and Joan (Benjamin) Abe of Seattle, WA, grandchildren Linda Hopen, Daudi Abe and Peter Abe, great grandchildren Dana and Leila Abe, sister-in-law Mary Henderson, nieces Debbie, Jean, Sue, Ann, nephews David, John, Jim, Bob and Rick. She was preceded in death by brothers Wilbur (Marjorie) and Robert (Marian), brother and sister-in-law Robert and Ida White, brother-in-law Jack Henderson and son-in-law Maurice Hopen. Ruth's family is particularly grateful to the dedicated and loving staff and volunteers of Four Winds Manor and to Hospice of Madison. A service will be held at First Congregational UCC on Friday, September 18 with a reception from 5:30 -- 6:30 and the memorial starting at 7:00. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the First Congregational Church of Madison, to the YWCA in Madison and to Hospice of Madison.
