Sarah ""Sally"" Jenkins passed away due to causes related to Alzheimer's disease on September 19, 2009 at Hospice, surrounded by her immediate family. Sally's lifelong commitment to defending the environment defined her professional career and personal interests. A Life Member of the Sierra Club, she enjoyed long walks with her dogs, gardening, bird watching , nature photography, and working to improve The Glen natural area in her neighborhood. Sally actively shared her love of nature with her niece and nephew. She supported a range of causes throughout her life, including the American Red Cross and the Nature Conservancy.
Born on February 10, 1944 to John W. Jenkins (deceased) and Josephine C. Jenkins (deceased), Sally lived most of her life in Madison. She and her family spent a decade in Northern California before Sally attended Reed College, In Portland, Oregon. There she received a Bachelor's degree in Physics. Ms. Jenkins also has a Master of Science in Biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, as well as a Master of Science from the UW-Madison. Sally worked for the Wisconsin Public Service Commission for twenty-five years, during which she contributed her expertise on a broad range of significant energy-related issues in Wisconsin, including acid deposition research. According to a commendation from Governor Jim Doyle presented to her upon retirement in 2003, Sally, ""has been a loyal and dedicated employee of the State of Wisconsin and the Public Service Commission and as such has earned the respect and admiration of the public and her co-workers throughout her career. [Her] strong work ethic, high degree of professionalism, and lifelong commitment to learning are an inspiration to others.""
Sally is survived by her brother, Jack and sister-in-law, Lynn; by her nephew, Wajid, and his daughter, Laila; by her niece, Ceri (Glenn Fung) and their children Liam and Amalia. We will miss Sally. Her family extends appreciation to Hospice for their guidance and care during Sally's final days. A private family service will be held. Memorials may be made in Sally's name to Hospice or the Westmorland Neighborhood Association in support of the Garlic Mustard Eradication efforts.
