Madison - Scott Lyman Sawyer, 66, passed away after a long battle with lung disease Sunday, Feb. 10 at Agrace HospiceCare with his family by his side.
He was born Oct. 27, 1946 in Ridgeway, PA, the son of Milford (Joe) and Virginia (Gina) Sawyer. He joined the U.S. Air Force as a helicopter mechanic after graduating from high school in North Tonawanda, NY. He was stationed at Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota where he met and married the love of his life, Carol Gregoire, on Jan. 28, 1967. He graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. degree in art education from the University of North Dakota.
He moved his family to Madison in 1972, where he began his 28-year teaching career at several Madison elementary schools. He also coached debate and forensics for a time at West High School. Scott was a huge sports fan, supporting the Badgers, Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills. He was an avid reader; he loved history and science fiction. We believe he is now commanding the star ship. He had an eclectic taste in music, and movies were also a passion. He loved his family and is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol; children, Jodi (Bob) Johnson (Missoula, MT) and Joel Sawyer (St. Paul) and grandsons, Jack and Bridger Johnson; sisters Donna Wasielewski and Laura Pascell and sister-in-law Linda Sawyer (from the Buffalo, NY area) and three kitties, Cadby who shared Scott's breakfast bananas, and girlies Poppy and Allie. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Alan. He will be sadly missed for his intellect, sense of humor, compassion and smile.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Agrace Hospice Staff and Dr. Greta Kuphal.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Dr., Madison on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Heiar presiding. A visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass.
