Shirley Roman

Madison -- Shirley Roman, age 91, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2010 with her loving family by her side.   She was born on February 25, 19 19 in Brooklyn , New York , the daughter of Lewis and Florence Nadel.     In May of 1939, Shirley and Seymour Roman eloped and ""officially"" married again in December of 1939.   She had many successful careers as a printmaker and watercolorist and a puppeteer.   Her puppetry took her all over the country and Europe as a performer and teacher.   Shirley lived most of her life in New York City , which she left in 1995, at the age of 76, to start a new life in Madison .   She immediately became active in the art and puppetry community here and made many new friends, especially her dear, dear friends Pat, Monique and Irvin.     Shirley is survived by her three children, David (Barbara Forest), Howie (Bernice McGowan) and Lauri; four grandchildren, Melissa (Jed) Untereker, Lee Bernfeld, Hannah (Emilie Eagan) Roman, Toby Roman; two great grandchildren, Leila Untereker and Baby Roman Eagan on his way.    A memorial service and art retrospective will be held at Temple Beth El, 2702 Arbor Dr., Madison,on Sunday, September 26, 2010 from 2 to 5 pm.   We thank all the wonderful staff at both Capitol Lakes and HospiceCare for all the kindness and care they bestowed on Shirley in her last few months.   Shirley's words: ""I am fascinated by the moods and patterns created by clouds and sea and I am challenged by the difficulties the etching medium and watercolor present in the effort to capture the infinite variety. I am interested in reaffirming the beauty around us when so much in the world has been made ugly.   I hope that my work helps contribute to recognition of the need to preserve and protect that beauty.""
