Stephen Gilfoy

William S. “Steve” Gilfoy, age 78, of Madison passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at home. He was born on August 12, 1943, in Sturgis, South Dakota, the son of James E and Ivy M Gilfoy. He married Pat on June 8, 1989, in Madison and they enjoyed 32 years together.

He graduated from East High School and entered the workforce before starting his 28-year career with the Madison Police Department in 1968. While with the MPD he served as a beat officer, a detective and finally as a court officer. Steve was recognized by co-workers for doing his work with grace, intelligence, skill, and always being pleasant and helpful. Steve served many years as the president for Madison Professional Police Officers Association. He was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard 13th Evacuation Medical Hospital unit for 16 years, retiring as a Sargent 1st class.

Steve didn’t like to be idle, except in his favorite chair watching TV with Pat. After his retirement from MPD, he worked as a courier for First Business Bank where he was always friendly, dependable, and trustworthy. He was a longtime member of the Madison Elks Lodge 410 where he also served as trustee. He loved his Taco Tuesdays with his group of buddies at the Caribou. Steve and Pat loved spending weekends and summers up north where the fishing was great. Steve was a loving husband, brother and friend who could brighten up the day with his wonderful smile.

He was survived by his wife Pat, his brother Bud, his sisters-in-law Kate (Bob) Watts, Mary (Steve) Stolen, and Joanne (Charles) Turner, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents James and Ivy, 3 brothers, 1 sister and his mother-in-law Harriet Mueller, sister-in-law Jean Rauch, brothers-in-law Jim and Joe Mueller.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 1 at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE PARISH, 401 S. Owen Dr., Madison from 10-11:30 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 am.
