Steven Means

Steven P. Means, age 56, of Madison, began his new life with Christ on July 25, 2017, following a battle with melanoma which began in March 2015. He was born in Charles City, Iowa on April 4, 1961, to Richard and Linda (Hill) Means.

Following his 1979 graduation from Newton (Iowa) High School, Steve earned his B.A. at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he participated in varsity swimming and track & field, while providing leadership to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Steve's swimming career included multiple school records, culminating in qualification for the 1983 NCAA Division III Championships.
In 1993, Steve was inducted into the Luther College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Also at Luther, Steve met the love of his life, Anne (Fuller) Means of Iowa City. Steve and Anne married on December 3, 1983. They attended graduate school at the University of Iowa. In 1987, Steve graduated from law school with High Distinction. He was an editor of Iowa Law Review and was inducted into the Order of the Coif.

Steve began practicing law in Madison, Wisconsin in 1988. He was in private practice, primarily as a partner in Michael Best & Friedrich. In 2007, Steve joined the Wisconsin Department of Justice as Executive Assistant Attorney General. Beginning in 2013, he worked for UW Health as General Counsel, Vice President of Legal Affairs & Compliance at UW Medical Foundation.

Steve is survived by his wife, Anne, and his beloved daughters Katherine of Seattle, WA and Claire of Madison. He is also survived by his parents Richard and Linda of Newton, IA, brothers Michael (Melinda) of Port Charlotte, FL and Daniel (Carole) of Urbandale, IA, and their families. Other survivors include parents-in-law James & Karole Fuller of Iowa City, and sisters-in-law Amy Stockman (Dean) of Oxford, IA and Laura Fuller (Greg Barton) of Coralville, IA, all of whom provided great support and caring to both Anne and Steve during the battle with cancer.

In addition to spending time with Anne and other family, Steve enjoyed exercising, reading, crossword puzzles, and fishing. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Wisconsin Badgers, and a shareholder in the Green Bay Packers. Steve's trips to the Vilas Zoo with his daughters were a special tradition which carried into their adult years. The family cottage on Crystal Lake was a place of peace and restoration that provided countless memories and times of enjoyment.

Steve's faith in Jesus Christ was at the forefront of his life. Even through his illness, he maintained a spirit of deep gratitude for his many blessings. Steve was an active member of Blackhawk Church in Madison. The church body demonstrated the love of Christ with a level of kindness and caring and love that Steve and his family are eternally grateful. The family is also grateful for Dr. Mark Albertini and the devoted staff at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center.

Visitation will be held at Cress Funeral Service, 3610 Speedway Road in Madison, on Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 4-7 PM.

A Memorial Service will be held at Blackhawk Church, 9620 Brader Way in Middleton, Wisconsin, on Friday, July 28, 2017 with visitation at 2:30 pm and service at 3:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Blackhawk Church REACH Initiative or Carbone Cancer Center.
