Madison - Steven Murray Schur was born on April 10th, 1941 to Murray and Rita Schur in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Evanston High School before attending the University of Wisconsin in Madison, graduating in 1963 with a history major. He then completed Law School at UW in the class of 1967.
Steve worked as a lawyer for the State of Wisconsin for 30 years. He was hired as an Assistant Attorney General. He then became the first Public Intervener, an environmental advocate for the citizens of Wisconsin. He retired in 1997 as the Chief Counsel of the Public Service Commission.
Steve married Jan (nee Rambo) Schur of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1965 and they enjoyed 46 years living in Madison where they raised 5 children: Brett Schur (Ann Ellen Dickter), Vicki Orrico (Brent), Sean Schur, Ellen Schur (Louis Whitford), and David Schur (fiance Brianna Wilson). Steve was very proud of all his children and their many and varied accomplishments. He loved spending time with his six grandchildren: Frankie and Christopher Orrico, Randy and Jake Schur and Olivia and Nash Whitford.
Steve loved the city of Madison, watching the sunset over Lake Mendota, and being out on the water. He valued institutions with an ecumenical spirit and once held the position of president of the University YMCA board. He was a fan of Badger sports, especially Badger Basketball. A voracious reader, Steve pursued lifelong interests in science, particularly the origin of life, history, and literature. Steve retired at the age of 58, to pursue good health and to enjoy his passions which included his many friends for whom he was deeply grateful, tennis, winters on Sanibel Island in Florida, photography, painting with watercolors, and time with his family.
Steve died September 26th after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He will be dearly missed and remembered for his kind and generous spirit, his contemplative wisdom, and his wry sense of humor.
A remembrance celebration will be held on Friday, September 30, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Steve & Jan's home, 1016 Sherman Avenue, Madison.
Memorials can be sent to YWCA Madison, 101 E. Mifflin Street, Madison, WI 53703 and Porchlight, 306 N. Brooks Street, Madison, WI 53715.
