Susan Campbell

April 2, 1935 — June 19, 2018

Susan Helen Campbell died on June 19, 2018 at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin, with family by her side. She was born on April 2, 1935 in Adrian, Michigan to John Crymble Campbell and Elizabeth Frost Schmedeman Campbell. She was a graduate of Adrian High School; Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri; and the Katharine Gibbs School in New York City. In 1957, while working in New York, she met and married a dashing young Greek named George V. Haniotis. That summer, they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where George received his Master's in Economics from the University of Michigan and Susan worked for the university, and where their son Basil George ("Billy") was born.

In 1961 they went to Greece, ostensibly for a summer, in order for Susan to meet George's family and for George's father to meet Billy, his grandson and namesake. A summer became a year, and a year became eighteen (including a year and a half in Paris), and then in 1997, when Billy came to the US to attend college, Susan also returned. She came to Madison to visit her sister - and to Ann's everlasting delight, she decided to stay.

In 1989, Mayor Paul Soglin appointed her to the Public Safety Review Board. She served five terms (ten years) with this body and loved it. She especially enjoyed the ride - alongs with the police, firefighters and paramedics, and greatly appreciated the information which they shared with her. Unfortunately, due to declining health, she was no longer able to run up several flights of stairs as the police often have to do, and she reluctantly resigned from the board.

While her health permitted, she was also a volunteer with WHA - TV (now Wisconsin Public Television), answering phones for membership drives, calling the lucky high bidder during Auction, and washing dishes for Great Chefs of Madison. She was happy to do anything to help.

Susan loved books - she was a voracious reader - and she had eclectic tastes, ranging from mysteries to the classics. She was particularly well read in politics and economics, and she relished a good political debate.

Left behind to mourn her are her sister, Ann; her son, Basil/Billy and his children, Alexandra, Theodora and George; her sister in law, Lita; her niece Alison with her husband, Nelson and their children, Campbell and Banner; and her niece Roula and nephew Vasili on George's side of the family. She is further survived by numerous cousins of the Campbell and Schmedeman persuasion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John C. Campbell Sr. and Elizabeth Frost Schmedeman Campbell; her brother, John C. Campbell, Jr.; and her former husband, George.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, June 22 at the Cress Center, 6021 University Ave, Madison, Wisconsin. The family will greet friends from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m., and the service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to University of Wisconsin Opera Props (350 S. Hamilton St, Unit 704, Madison WI 53703); Friends of Sequoya Library (4340 Tokay Blvd, Madison, WI 53705); or Wisconsin Public Television (821 University Ave., Madison WI 53706) or other charity of the donor's choice. The family also would like to urge everyone to write to their legislative representative and demand comprehensive, affordable universal health care.
