Susan Lloyd

January 20, 1936 — February 3, 2022

As with all things, mother arrived on her terms, and when she was good and ready. Honoring her traditions, here follows, her belated, full obituary.

Susan (Scherr) Lloyd passed away peacefully from malignant melanoma, surrounded by loving family, on February 3, 2022, at home in Madison, Wisconsin.

She was born January 20th, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the first daughter of Joseph W. Scherr Jr. and Mildred Scherr (Bushey).

She was baptized into the Christianity, on March 28, Easter morning, in 1937.

Sue attended Lotspeich Elementary School, then attended Hillsdale High School (Seven Hills School) graduating on June 5, 1953.

Accepted at Northwestern, Bryn Mawr, and other colleges, she chose to attend Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She graduated in 1957, with a major in Math and minor in Economics.

After college, she traveled extensively throughout Europe with friends. She worked in New York as a secretary for New York Life Insurance Company before returning to Cincinnati.

Sue met the love of her life, The Rev. Arthur S. Lloyd, at the Church of the Redeemer in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Sue and Art were joined in marriage on September 24th, 1960, at the Church of the Redeemer.  The couple moved to Bloomington, Indiana, spent a short time in New Haven, CT., then settled in Madison, Wisconsin in September of 1968.

Sue was instrumental in many social and economic justice causes and committees including: The League of Women Voters, SAIL (Supporting Active Independent Lives), CALA (Community Action on Latin America, The Wisconsin Interfaith Committee on Latin America, WCCN (Working Capital for Community Needs), WCF (Wisconsin Community Fund), ENEJ (Episcopal Network for Economic Justice), Madison Arcatao Sister City Project (MASCP), St. Dunstan’s Outreach Committee, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, to name a few of the organizations close to her heart. She eagerly participated in the annual Fair Trade Holiday Fair each year in Madison. She was the campaign treasurer for Representative Bob Kastenmeier through some of his political years.

She found the term for what she was doing, “Micro Financing”, in her later years. Her field didn’t exist in 1957 when she graduated, but it was her true calling in life.

In 1990, Sue and Art took leadership roles in the group which founded and developed The Village Co-housing Community Inc., a condominium association and the first co-housing project in Madison. They moved into the Village in 1999, and she remained there until her passing.

In the words of a dear family friend:

“In all her social justice work and personal dealings Sue kept a sharp and critical eye out for any form of injustice, unkindness, condescension, incompetence and pretension.

It could truly be said that she suffered neither knaves nor fools.

While not a person of many words, she could convey her dissatisfaction with a stern glance.

However, her sometimes icy appearance hid a truly kind, loyal and compassionate heart.”   MSE

She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin through her later years. Partly to keep her brain alert, partly for the discount she received, as a student, to Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

She was an avid tennis player, golfer (receiving not 1, but 2 holes-in-one!), pianist, equestrian, swimmer, sailor, Bridge player, recorder player, knitter, puzzle solver, and reader. She enjoyed trying different cuisines, though--her favorite thing to make for dinner “a reservation”! She had a love of architecture in all forms. She loved spending time in Wellfleet, MA, going to the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, and the Chequessett Yacht and Country Club, she was a Wisconsin Film Festival connoisseur, loved farmers markets, fair trade bazaars and everything that involved history and art.

She is preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Arthur S Lloyd, father, Joseph W. Scherr Jr., her mother Mildred P.(Bushey), and her sister, Elinor S. Mosher.

Survivors include her son, Joseph S. (fiancé, the late Diane Chapman), daughter, Louisa (Greg) Cierzan of Onalaska, WI, grandchildren Robert J., Jessica (Fiancé Zach Dickson) Pena, and many nieces and nephews. Special mention to Chelsea (Cierzan), her husband Phil, and their wonderful children, Theodore, and Joel, who brought joy and laughter in mother’s last years.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Agrace, the caregivers and companions, the Carbonne Cancer Center, University hospitals and staff, Meriter Hospital, Group Health Clinic and the many other hospitals and clinics, and especially her friends from the VCC community, which helped with her diagnosis, treatment, and care.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave, Madison.
