Suzanne Hodgman was born on July 16, 1925 in Chicago, the daughter of Richard H. Hodgman and Barbara (Sands) Hodgman. She was raised in suburban Chicago, graduating from Thornton Township High School in Harvey, IL in 1943. She attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College, the University of New Mexico (B.A.), the National University of Mexico, Tulane University (M.A.), and the University of Texas at Austin (M.L.S.). She was a reference librarian at the San Antonio, TX Public Library from 1959-1960, Latin American Specialist in Acquisitions at the University of Florida Libraries from 1960-1965, and she served as the bibliographer for Ibero-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin- Madison Libraries from 1965 until her retirement in 1997.
Suzanne was a member of multiple professional organizations, the most important of which was the Seminar of the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM), the professional organization in Latin American Librarianship. She served as executive secretary for SALALM for 10 years between 1980-1990. In the early 1990s, she also served as treasurer of the Madison Civics Club.
Before becoming a professional librarian, Suzanne held a variety of jobs. During World War II, she worked for the Illinois Central Railroad as a teletype operator. At one time or another, she also worked as a school bus driver in the Chicago area, taught English as a second language, and was a bilingual secretary for an international firm. She was also an indefatigable traveler who has experienced life in more than 50 countries on all seven continents.
Suzanne is predeceased by her parents, Richard H. and Barbara (Sands) Hodgman; her brother, Robert Hodgman; her daughter, Barbara Elizabeth Dines; and her granddaughter, Katherine Dines. She is survived by her granddaughter, Megan Dines Koncal, MD (Dayton, OH); her great-grandson, Gavin M. Koncal (Dayton, OH); her son-in-law, Thomas M. Dines (Breckenridge, CO and Marco Island, FL); her grandson-in-law, Scott D. Koncal, MD (Dayton, OH); and her sister-in-law, Maria B. Hodgman (Naperville, IL).
