Suzanne Marie Penfield, 91, of Madison, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on March 25, 2024 at Randolph Health Services in Randolph, WI.
She was born July 14, 1932 in Spring Green, WI, the first of six children of Louis and Hilda (Feiner) Hetzel. She graduated from Saint Luke's Catholic High School in Plain, WI in 1950 and attended Madison Business College, where she studied shorthand and typing.
Sue married James A. Penfield on September 1, 1960. She worked as a medical secretary for the Dean Clinic before her marriage, and later worked in the American Family Insurance claims department for 30 years.
Sue was always willing to lend a hand to help friends, family, and strangers. She was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church where she ushered, hosted parish groups, and made her famous deviled eggs for funeral luncheons. In retirement she volunteered for Olbrich Gardens, Monona Senior Center, St Vincent de Paul, and the Food Pantry. She was presented with the prestigious Presidential Volunteer Services Award in 2017, and the Governor's Service Award in 2021.
Sue had a positive attitude and a zest for living. She loved bowling, gardening, and all variety of flowers. She also enjoyed traveling, including trips to Bermuda, Canada, and Hawaii. She was a fan of the Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers, and Badger football. Her children, Mark of Waunakee, and Leanne Kerrigan (Ian) of Seattle, and her grandchildren, James and Lauren, were the joy of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband James and her brother Melvin. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, sister Jeralyn Meyer (Arthur), and brothers Robert Hetzel, Richard Hetzel, and Gary Hetzel.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 404 E. Main, Madison 53703. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona, followed by a reception.
The family would like to thank the staff at Randolph Health Services and Agrace for the exceptional care they provided for Sue.
In lieu of flowers donations to a cause in Sue's name will be designated by the family at a later date.
