Thomas Herman

A heavenly band of angels embraced a new drummer as Tom joined them on March 31, 2023. He fought a courageous battle with a long-term illness, and he so wanted to stay longer with his loving wife, Patricia Kexel, his son Tedd Herman and wife Jenna, his daughter Annie and husband Dan Larson, and AFS daughter Alejandra and husband Fabian Teran. Especially cherished by him were his grandchildren Sofia and Connor Herman and Fabiana and Natalia Teran.  In the end, he met his final days with dignity, surrounded at home by those he loved.

Tom was a very passionate, kind, and loving man. His dedication to Patty could never be questioned as he treated her like a queen and was a romantic at heart. He was a wonderful father to his children kindly teaching them through word and example many important life lessons. A musician at heart, he kept the beat from early childhood until his passing. Tom drummed nearly his whole life and performed to the delight of many in two bands—Moondance for over 40 years and more recently Sundance as well.  Another love was soccer. Although he had never played, he volunteered to coach his kids’ teams and spent many hours studiously watching tapes on soccer techniques before each practice. Later in life he played on a team jokingly called the Grumpy Old Men. Dubbed Señor Grumpy by teammates, Tom was known for his hilarious and stimulating half time pep talks.

Devoting his entire career to state service in the Department of Administration, Tom rarely missed a day and was a shining example of professionalism, a tireless work ethic, and respect for all he encountered.

Tom will be missed by so many for a myriad of reasons, but perhaps his quick wit and wholehearted willingness to join with Patty in countless crazy antics for their entire time together stand out. He was a remarkable man who brought joy to all who knew him and inspiration to those left behind.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, April 10, 2023 at Holy Wisdom Monastery, with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Agrace HospiceCare Inc.
