Waunakee - Thomas (Tom) Henry Pliner, age 77, passed away unexpectedly on August 17, 2011 at Meriter Hospital surrounded by family.
Tom was born in Hillsboro, WI on November 8, 1933 to Valentine Virginia Lovell and Henry Pliner.
In 1950, at the age of 17, Tom enlisted in the United States Navy, where he obtained his high school diploma. Tom spent 3 years in the Navy, specializing in communications during the Korean War.
In 1955, Tom was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Mislivecek. Tom and Shirley resided initially in Milwaukee, WI. They spent eight years in Milwaukee, moving to Sun Prairie, WI in 1963. That year, their daughter Jodie was born. In 1972, their son Scott was born.
Tom worked at various places and in 1966 found himself employed with the Middleton Police department where he spent 10 years. In 1978, Tom and Shirley moved to Waunakee where Tom joined the Waunakee Police Department. Tom worked another 14 years in Waunakee, retiring from the force in July of 1991. Until his death, Tom worked as a security guard, most recently working for Jim Mankowski at JBM Security & Patrol. Tom worked for JBM a total of 10 years.
Tom was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish and shoot trap. His basement is filled with trophy horns and fish as a reminder of his many adventures. He loved to take long drives through the countryside looking for wild turkeys and deer. Tom raised his family appreciating the outdoors, spending lots of time fishing and hunting with his son, Scott.
Tom also loved to play the slots. He always thought he could win "the big one", and there wasn't a Wednesday or Saturday that went by that he didn't have a "Supercash" ticket.
Tom had a kind and generous heart. He had many friends and family that will miss him. There wasn't anything that he wouldn't do for someone. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His grandkids, Jessica and Christopher, were the apples of his eye, and he had a close, special relationship with both. He loved his family, and his family loved him more than he really knew.
Tom is survived by his wife Shirley of Waunakee, a daughter, Jodie (Bill) Busch of Waunakee, a son Scott (Sarah) Pliner of Verona, two grandchildren, Jessica and Christopher Busch of Waunakee. He is also survived by many nieces and newphews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20 at 11:00 am at the Winn-Cress Funeral Home, 5785 Highway Q, Waunakee with Rev. Ben Ehrets officiating, and a luncheon to be held immediately after at Rex's Innkeeper.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care from the many nurses and doctors, and the chaplain from Meriter Hospital. A special thanks goes out to Karen Bush for her friendship and care.
