Stoughton- Vernon R. Vaage, age 84 of Stoughton, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison on Monday, January 26, 2009. He was born in Rockdale on April 6, 1924, a son of the late Olaf and Eva (Severson) Vaage. Vernon attended Cambridge High School. He was united in marriage to Mary Maxine Woodruff on September 23, 1950. Vernon drove semi truck for Arthur Severson in Albion, worked on the dock at Neundorf Trucking, and in retirement, drove cars for Stark. He was a member of Covenant Lutheran Church, and Teamsters Local 695. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren and was known to many others as grandpa'. He made friends wherever he went, was well loved and is remembered for his practical jokes and sense of humor. Vernon and Maxine enjoyed travelling, especially to Northern Wisconsin. He visited every state except Alaska, and also enjoyed hunting, and fishing. He is survived by his wife Mary Maxine; daughter, Katherine (John) Nelson, of Stoughton; son, John Vaage, of Milton; four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Zachary Nelson and Shawn and Andrew Vaage; sister, Betty (Irv) Melaas; brother, Leon Vaage; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 30, 2009 at 6pm at Covenant Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Van Buren St., Stoughton, with the Rev. Mark Petersen officiating. The family will greet friends at church on Friday from 4-6pm. Following services, there will be a reception at church. Special thanks Stoughton Hospital ICU and Dr. Agni, and to St. Mary's ICU and Dr. Santana.
