Virgene A. Hartl

Stoughton – Virgene A. Hartl, age 93, passed away peacefully at Skaalen Nursing Home on Monday September 23, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on February 11, 1931, in Stoughton, the daughter of the late Arnold and Anna (Christopherson) Swenson. Virgene attended Stoughton Schools graduating in 1949. She was united in marriage to Eugene Hartl on November 3, 1951, at St. Paul’s Catholic church in Evansville. Virgene worked at the Stoughton Telephone Company as a switchboard operator until 1960 when everything went “dial”. She then worked at different shops in town until their daughter Kerry arrived. Virgene loved being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother! She also enjoyed being a teacher’s aide at St. Ann School, having lunch and shopping with friends, playing Euchre, and dressing up, dancing, and traveling on many adventures with Eugene.

She is survived by her daughter Kerry (David) Steckbauer of Stoughton; grandchildren Travis (Chelsea) Steckbauer of Stoughton, Kellie (Blake) Johnson of Seattle, WA., Bryce Steckbauer of Stoughton; great grandchildren Theo and Mila Steckbauer and Mollie Johnson; sister-in-law Shirley Hartl of Waunakee; as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Virgene was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 69 years Eugene in 2021; sisters Elaine (Glenn) Morrick, Barbara Austin, Kathleen Swenson, sisters and brothers-in-law Virginia (Willard) Moore, Carroll Hartl, Donna (Eric) Johnson, and Dale Elliott.

A heartfelt thank you to all who wrote cards, asked about, helped, prayed for, or simply kept our family in their thoughts and prayers. A special thank you to the wonderful caring staff of Magnolia Garden Memory Care especially Deloris, Sherri and Kathy, and Agrace HospiceCare. Our family is so grateful for the excellent care and compassion provided to mom and our family.

Our lives go on without you, but nothing is the same. We have to hide our heartache when someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you. Silent the tears that fall. Living our hearts without you is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us. Your heart was kind and true. And when we need someone we could always count on you. The special years will not return when we were all together. But with the love within our hearts, you will walk with us forever.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday September 27, 2024, at ST ANN CATHOLIC CEMETERY, 2504 County Hwy A, Stoughton, WI 53589 with Fr. Randy Budnar presiding.

Memorials may be made to St. Ann Catholic Church, to Agrace HospiceCare, or to a memorial of your choice.
