Walter J. Laufenberg

Walter J. Laufenberg, age 92, of Waunakee passed away on Sat., Aug. 24, 2024 at Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI. He was born on Sept. 2, 1931 at the home farm in Ashton, the son of John and Rose (Meinholz) Laufenberg. He married Antoinette Frederick on April 23, 1955 in Waunakee.

Walter attended St. Peter’s Catholic school until 6th grade. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in Nov. of 1955 at the age of 23 and was stationed in Alaska where he drove a tank. After returning home from his military service he took over the family farm where he and his wife farmed and raised their family. He enjoyed playing home talent baseball for many years and later played in the “old timers” slow pitch softball league. Walter also enjoyed playing golf with other retired farmers. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ashton where he was a parish council member. He also held positions on several agricultural boards including, the Middleton Farmer Cooperative for 24 years, Foremost Farms for 12 years and the Equity Board.

Survivors include; his wife Antoinette; sons, Fred (Mary)of Waunakee, Jim (Julie) of Belleville and Dave (Kate) of Waunakee; daughters, Mary Johnson of Florida, and Sharon (Mark) Knowles of Arizona; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; his brother, Ralph (Carol); and sister, Florentine (Al) Breunig.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Inez Ballweg and Bernice Breunig; and his grandson, Jason Laufenberg.

Funeral services will be held on Sat., August 31, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church 7121 County Trunk K in Middleton. Visitation will be held on Fri., Aug. 30th from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church. Friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Sat. at the church. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
