Madison - Warren Randy passed away on July 21, 2017 at the age of 91. Warren was blessed with a combination of the best of human qualities. He was consistently cheerful, loving, generous, wise, loyal, kind, hardworking, modest and ethical. He led his life according to a set of principles that he conveyed to his children and grandchildren, and role modeled for them: "Always look on the bright side", "Everything in moderation", "Never say an unkind word about anyone", "Honesty is the best policy", "Do the right thing", and "Take care of those less fortunate than yourself." He had a quiet, steadfast, gentle strength, and lived an admirable life that has been inspirational to many.
Warren was born on April 29, 1926, to Leah and Oscar Randy in Duluth Minnesota. He graduated from Superior High School at age 17 during WWII and promptly enlisted in the navy. He toured the Pacific on the USS Kingsbury. After the war Warren attended UW Madison. He thoroughly enjoyed his college years. He became an avid Badger fan, joined the ZBT fraternity, of which he was president for 2 years, and served on the Daily Cardinal Board. He made many lifelong friends. Warren married Gerry Daitch, the first girl he met in Madison, in 1950. They were just 2 months shy of their 65th anniversary when Gerry died in 2015.
Warren graduated Phi Beta Kappa in accounting, and became a CPA, first as a solo practitioner, and then joining Mattox and Associates, which later merged with Grant Thornton, specializing in tax accounting. He "retired" at 65, only to set up solo practice again, sharing office space with Porter and Sack. He retired again at 85.
Warren cared deeply about his family and community. He was generous with his time, resources and energy. He served on many professional and charitable boards, including ZBT, Madison Hillel, and Lions Club, the Madison Jewish Community Council, Beth Israel Center and Beth El. He tutored and mentored families in the community and visited prisoners. He spent many years on the board of the Progressive Magazine.
Warren had many hobbies. He loved to read, dance, travel, play poker, cribbage and bridge, He and Gerry had a large circle of friends. Warren was a talented piano player, and enlivened many parties and family gatherings with his ability to hear a melody once and play it by ear in his signature, upbeat style, often singing and harmonizing to the music.
Warren remained kind, considerate, and cheerful even as the infirmities of old age took their toll. He never complained, was always upbeat, enjoying whatever it was he could still enjoy. He continued making jokes and puns with his friends, family, and caregivers. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Heartland Hospice who gave care and comfort to both Warren and Gerry during the last years of their lives.
Warren is survived by his brother Jim (Amy) Randy, sister Rochelle (Gary) Larson, daughters Claudia (Willie) Haus and Linda (John) Eaves, grandchildren Andrea (Avi) Bernstein, Emily (Jeff) Stone, Alison Haus, and Samantha (Rom) Desjardins, great grandchildren Jake and Sasha Bernstein, Jackson and Ryan Stone, and Rommy Desjardins, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
