Stoughton- Wayne R. "Cuzzy" Nelson, age 75, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at UW Hospital in Madison. He was born in Stoughton on November 21, 1936, a son of Glen and Ruth (Maurer) Nelson. Wayne graduated from Stoughton High School in 1954, and served his country in the Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He was united in marriage to Maria Vlaanderen in Amsterdam, Holland on October 4, 1958. Wayne took over a roofing business from his father and his uncle Alvin, operating Wayne R. Nelson Roofing for 45 years. He was still actively working until the last day. Wayne played and managed Stoughton Hometown Baseball for over 30 years, bringing the team to a title and being recognized as Manager of the Year in 1986. He coached VFW Teener Baseball, umpired and played men's fast pitch softball, and was an honorary S Club member. Wayne was a fan of all Stoughton High School sports, UW sports and the Packers. He enjoyed Deer hunting in Black River Falls, visits to Ho-Chunk and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Maria; sons, Mark 'Cuzzy', Richie (Kara), Alan, and Scott 'Puddy" (Ericka) Nelson; a daughter, Lisa Nelson; grandchildren, Justin, Tiffany, Amanda, Roby, Codi, Jake, Paige and Samantha; 2 great grandchildren, Tyler and Madelyn; a sister, Marilyn (Elvin) Swiggum; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by an infant son, Wayne Nelson.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at the Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 20th from 4:00pm until 7:00 pm, and again on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00. Following services, military rites will be performed at the funeral home and a luncheon will be held at the Stoughton American Legion Hall on North Page St. Memorials may be made to The Stoughton Home Talent Building Fund.
