Madison-Werner Schwarz, age 94, died on July 7, 2009 at HospiceCare, Inc. in Fitchburg. He was born on November 10, 1914 to Gottlieb and Mathilde (nee Levy) Schwarz in Soetern, Germany. His family soon moved to Illingen, Germany, where he was raised and educated. Although the grandson of a Franco-Prussian War veteran and the son of a fallen World War I veteran, when faced with the rise of Nazism in Germany, he urgently sought to leave his country of origin. He first escaped to Brazil where he remained illegally for two years before he was able to immigrate lawfully to the United States. He proudly became a US citizen in 1943. Werner met his future wife, Henny (nee Kotler) in New York City, shortly after his arrival. They were married on March 29, 1942. Within a year of their marriage, he was inducted into the US army, where his service included the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of Saint Lo, and the Battle of the Bulge. After returning home, he worked for many years managing a series of hardware and home improvement stores in the New York City area. Once retired, he and Henny moved to Madison, a place they have both thoroughly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister and is survived by his wife, Henny, daughter Leslie (Seth) Perelman of Verona, and granddaughters, Elisheva (Steven Dale) Perelman of Oakland, California, and Abigayl Perelman of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on July 13th at Cress Funeral Home 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with Rabbi Jonathan Baitch officiating.
