William (Bill) Dingler Miller of Madison died on October 19, 2009 following a recurrence of bladder cancer. Bill was born on June 12, 1940 in Elmira, New York. Bill earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Hamilton College, New York in 1962. He completed a Master's in French from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1966 and received his doctorate in French from the UW-Madison in 1972. Bill spent over 39 years on the staff of UW-Madison, serving most of that time as Assistant Dean of the College of Letters and Science. His responsibilities included academic advising and supervision of an innovative computer program (DARS) that monitored students' progress toward graduation. Bill's hobbies included photography, music, and travel. He was active in the New Harvest Foundation and Perfect Harmony Men's Chorus. Bill was a member of First Baptist Church, and served as a deacon, among other things. Bill was a long-term survivor of HIV.

Bill is survived by his children, Cynthia Miller Lovell and Bruce Windsor Miller, and their spouses; his grandchildren, Sara Joy Lovell, Margaret Victoria Miller, and Eloise Windsor Miller; and his brother, Robert Lee Miller.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 1, 2009, at First Baptist Church, 518 North Franklin Avenue, Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church (in celebration of Bill's participation in the church's inclusive ministries) or to the Companion Animal fund of the UW-Madison's School of Veterinary Medicine (in celebration of Bill's love of animals).
