Madison/Monroe - William R. Rieder "Bill", age 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, March 16, 2015 at All Saints Assisted Living.
Bill was born June 22, 1923 in Monroe to the late William C. Rieder and Eunice P. Rieder (nee Smith). He graduated from Monroe High School in 1941 and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country from 1942-1946. On October 6, 1947, he married Marie Wahl. Together they celebrated 67 years of marriage. Bill was a butcher and proprietor of Rieder's Market for 15 years. The family moved to Madison in 1967 when Bill became a federal meat inspector.
He was very active in his church and community. For over 20 years, he picked up donated food from grocery stores and took it to food pantries. He also was very involved with the Knights of Columbus Council #531, 4th Degree Assembly 1200 where he served as a past Commander of the Honor Guard. He also belonged to The American Legion and V.F.W. Bill was honored to receive The Papal Award in 2000.
Bill was preceded in death by his brothers; Robert and Kenneth Rieder.
Survivors include his wife, Marie, son; William J. (Mary Spike) Rieder and daughter; Mary Therese (Bradley) Kemp, and nieces and nephews.
Friends may join the family for a visitation at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Rd, Madison, WI 53705 on Monday, March 23 from 4-6 p.m. Additional visitation will take place from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Msgr. Ken Fiedler presiding. Bill will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Monroe.
