Winston L. Brembeck, age 96, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at his home.  Winston was born the son of Paul and Hulda (Speicher) Brembeck on September 28, 1912 in Urbana Indiana.  He was united in marriage to Neva P. Gloyde in 1940.  Winston received his BS from Manchester College, Manchester, Indiana. He began is life long teaching career at Iowa College.  Winston served his country in the US Army during WWII as an Intelligence Specialist in the Pacific theatre. He also served as a Post Warden for the Air Raid Protection Service in New York City. After discharge Winston continued his teaching, and also attended the UW-Madison during the summer months obtaining his MA in 1935, and is PhD in 1947.  Winston taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1946, until his retirement in 1984 as UW Professor Emeritus of the Department of Communications Arts.  He was a founding member of the American Forensic Associaton, and was also a member of the Abraham Lincoln Association.  One of his major accomplishments was the publication of the college text book that is still used widely, Persuasion:   A Means of Social Influence. Winston was often referenced and quoted by many, and was known for his many works on Persuasion, Rhetoric, Debate, Critical Thinking, and Speech.  He treasured the 69 years that he shared with his wife Neva in the house that he designed.  Their home was adjacent to the Arboretum, and he enjoyed bird watching, and he had an extensive collection of fine books.  The couple also had a lake cottage in Indiana that was a favorite place for vacationing.  Winston is survived by his wife Neva, sister; Ardis, a brother; Howard, a sister-in-law Helen, and  nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Cole and Paul. Winston was well cared for by his live-in caregivers Oogi and Bogi.   A funeral service will be at 4:30 on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Rd., Madison, with visitation from 3:30 until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice.
